Evolve or Die

Happy New Month and Happy International Workers’ Day!
This month marks a moment of reflection for me — I’ve been working professionally for 8 years now. Over the years, I’ve observed a few patterns when it comes to career growth, especially in a service-driven economy like Ghana’s.
Unlike industrial economies built on production, Ghana leans heavily on trade and services. And in recent times, the service sector has been largely shaped by the rise of the digital age.
As someone in the digital service space, I can only speak from that perspective — and it’s clear how much the industry has evolved.
I remember graduating as a Graphic and Web Designer. Back then, those were high-value skills. Designers, especially those in agencies or freelancing, were doing really well. Web designers had the edge too — long before social media took over, owning a website was your business’s digital real estate.
But today, the roles of a designer or developer have transformed. It’s no longer enough to know Photoshop, Illustrator, or how to create divs styled with CSS. You now need a broader toolkit — more coding languages, product design principles, and even an understanding of backend development. Sometimes, upskilling into roles like Product Management becomes the next logical step.
This evolution is at the heart of why I’m writing this today.
As we celebrate workers globally, I believe one of the best forms of leverage in your career is becoming a fast learner — someone who can upskill or pivot quickly. It’s no longer just about passion. It’s about adaptability. You can’t afford to be left behind.
Tech is disrupting industries at lightning speed. We’ve seen companies cut their workforce from 300 to 50 because automation made certain roles redundant.
In this digital space, complacency isn’t an option.
Stay sharp. Keep learning. Reinvent when needed.
